Urns and Keepsakes
An urn is not a requirement. A dignified temporary container is included with every cremation we carry out, and a great many families never need anything else. If you do want something more, here is what to know before you buy.
The kinds families choose
- The included temporary container
- Dignified, labelled with your loved one’s name, and scannable at an airport X-ray. Many families keep their loved one in it permanently, and there is nothing at all wrong with that.
- A display urn
- Wood, ceramic, stone, glass or metal, for a home or a mantelpiece. Choose the material with some thought if it may ever need to fly.
- A cemetery or columbarium urn
- Where cremated remains are to be interred or placed in a niche, the cemetery usually has its own size and material requirements. Check with them before buying.
- A biodegradable urn
- For burial or for scattering at sea, designed to break down. Required by some memorial gardens and by the practicalities of a water committal.
- Keepsakes and jewelry
- Small containers holding a portion of the cremated remains, so more than one family member has somewhere to go. Worth checking your faith’s guidance first: some traditions ask that remains be kept together.
- A veterans niche
- If your loved one served, a national cemetery niche and marker are provided at no cost, and the cemetery will tell you what container it accepts.
What we will tell you honestly
You are not obliged to buy an urn from us.
You may buy one anywhere, including online, and we will transfer the cremated remains into it at no charge. A provider that will not do that is telling you something.
The included container is genuinely sufficient.
It is dignified, appropriate, and carries your loved one’s name. Nobody should feel that spending more is a measure of how much they loved someone.
Metal and stone urns will not fly.
If the cremated remains may ever travel by air, a solid metal or dense stone urn will not clear TSA screening. Travel with the scannable container and transfer at the destination.
Check the size before you buy.
An adult generally needs around 200 cubic inches of capacity. Undersized urns are the most common ordering mistake, and a keepsake is not a substitute for a full-size urn.

What families do with cremated remains
They may be interred in a cemetery plot, placed in a columbarium niche, inurned in a national cemetery for a veteran, kept at home, divided among family in keepsakes, or scattered. Scattering at sea is permitted under federal rules beyond three nautical miles, and Florida has no general prohibition on scattering on private land with the owner’s permission. If your family’s faith has a view, tell us and we will work to it rather than around it.

Do I have to buy an urn?
No. A dignified temporary container, labelled with your loved one’s name, is included with every cremation, and it is a perfectly proper permanent resting place. Many families never buy anything else, and nobody should feel that spending more is a measure of how much they loved someone.
Can I buy an urn somewhere else?
Yes, anywhere you like, including online. We will transfer the cremated remains into it at no charge. A provider who refuses to do that, or who charges a handling fee for it, is telling you something about how they operate.
What size urn do I need?

Which urn materials can go on a plane?
Wood, plastic, resin, cardboard and most ceramics are scannable and clear TSA screening. Solid metal and dense stone will not, because the officer cannot see inside and will not open the container. Travel with the scannable container we provide and transfer at your destination.
